Department of Petroleum & Mining Engineering (PME)

The faculty members of the Petroleum and Mining Engineering Department pursue multidisciplinary knowledge and skills aimed at cultivating comprehensive, technological, socioeconomic, and global understanding. They have a vision for energy-secured Bangladesh and are constantly working on this aspect. Our teachers aspire to empower students to realize their full potential for serving local and global communities in need of improved conditions. Our faculty also support students very enthusiastically in co-curricular and extracurricular activities.

Department of Petroleum and Mining Engineering is delighted to announce that Professor Dr. A K M Badrul Alam from PME Department has been granted a research fund under the Ministry of Science and Technology Special Research Grant (FY 2025-26). His project is among the two research projects from Military Institute of Science and Technology which got this prestigious funding.

Guided by learned faculty members and supported by MIST authority, undergraduate students gained many achievements.  The talented and self-motivated students always continuously prove their worth by successfully competing and winning various awards. Recently, Jannati Kabir Eshara (PME-08), Mahir Tajwar Shabab (PME-08) and many other students from current batches are maintaining the legacy of their alumni and achieving success in national and international areas.

Our students excel in various contests and have certainly made their mark on both the national and international arenas with great results. We also proudly hosted the PME Day 2025 poster presentation on 28 August with 11 teams from different levels. The theme of the poster presentation was "Exploring the Petroleum and Mining Landscape in Bangladesh." Students have presented the different aspects of petroleum and mining engineering applications to achieve desirable performance variables in the respective fields.

PME Dept faculties have been relentlessly contributing to the field of research in the petroleum and mining engineering. In order to make the department a center of excellence, the department is working dedicatedly by publishing research articles that encompass quality with quantity. Currently, PME dept faculties are showing an increasing trend of publishing research articles over the years.

Student chapters are located around the world and provide an operating framework for social activities at a university level. The SPE Student Chapter – MIST has been approved by to SPE International in April 2021. It is affiliated with SPE – Bangladesh Section. MIST SPE Student Chapter is growing with the vision of providing continuous personal and professional growth will bring the opportunity for students to organize and participate in technical and non-technical events, engage in technical discussions, network with industry professionals, and learn more about the oil & gas industry. The Student Chapter aims to organize various events such as virtual panel discussion, talk on career opportunities, quiz on oil-gas and mineral extraction, seminar on the oil and gas industry, national conference on advances in petroleum science and technology and ore extraction.

The Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) Petroleum and Mining Engineering Alumni is a network of successful individuals who pursued a variety of paths in the field of petroleum and mining engineering. After graduating from MIST's acclaimed halls, these graduates have come together to create a dynamic community that connects academia and industry. These graduates demonstrate the institute's dedication to producing well-rounded professionals by making major contributions to the growth of petroleum and mining engineering techniques with their combined extent of expertise. The Petroleum and Mining Engineering Alumni Association represents the long-lasting influence of their alma mater on the dynamic field of petroleum and mining engineering by emulating a heritage of excellence, teamwork, and invention.
